Student Wellbeing
At St Matthews Catholic School the wellbeing of our students is central to all that we do. This is strongly supported by our Restorative Approach to working with and developing our students.
Restorative Practices at St Matthews
St Matthews Catholic School endeavours to provide for each member of the community – students, staff and families – the experience of high quality interpersonal relationships marked by care and support. From time to time in any community, relationships can be harmed in various ways and to varying degrees. It is incredibly important to us that as a community we promote resolution of conflict and the restoration of relationships as the best way of responding when issues arise.
Restorative Practice at St Matthews is founded on the belief that when relationships are harmed we want to work with students, teachers and families to restore those relationships. The practices we implement assist students to learn from their mistakes, reconcile their differences and resolve problems with others.
At our Primary Campus, the relationship that is developed between families and your child’s classroom teacher is central to our approach to student wellbeing and we strongly encourage parents to connect regularly and positively with our staff in order to build those relationships over time. At our Secondary Campus, Tutor Groups play an important role in providing pastoral care to students. Tutors see the students in their Tutor Group each day and are able to support the academic, social and personal wellbeing of each student in their care. They are also able to provide an initial point of contact for parents in the secondary context where children have a variety of teachers across their subjects. The Secondary Wellbeing Team also provides an invaluable avenue of support for students and their families.
